Internet addiction
Internet addiction is becoming an increasing problem. Excessive internet and computer use can take many forms including gaming, compulsive surfing, online gambling or compulsive use of Internet pornography or adult chat rooms. Internet use becomes an addiction when the person:
- Has difficulty controlling the impulse to use
- Spends excessive amount of time engaged in the Internet activity to the detriment of other tasks or commitments
- Has lost contact with family and usual friends, and feels more connected with online friends
- Hides or lies about their computer use for fear of disapproval, being told off, shame or fear of being misunderstood
- Gets temporary relief from feeling stressed, upset, alone, and instead feels excited, happy, socially connected and sexually gratified (for internet pornography).
Internet use becomes an addiction when it starts to significantly affect other aspects of life such as real-life intimate relationships or friendships, finances, job or study performance, or general well being (sleep problems, marked weight changes, back or neck aches, dry or strained eyes). Another tell-tale sign is when using the internet routinely and compulsively becomes the first strategy people turn to as way of relieving unpleasant emotions (such as loneliness, boredom, stress, anxiety or depression).
